Pet Oncology
At ACES, we understand that a cancer diagnosis for your beloved pet can be a challenging and emotional time. You can find comfort in knowing that we offer compassionate and personalized oncology services right here. Our dedicated oncology specialist, Dr. Breann Sommer, is board-certified and committed to providing the best care for your animal companion. Dr. Sommer will work closely with you and your primary veterinarian to develop a personalized treatment plan focused on your pet’s specific needs and well-being.

Here’s a closer look at the services we offer:
- Diagnosis and Staging: Just like in human medicine, accurately identifying the type of cancer and determining how far it has progressed (staging) is the first crucial step. Dr. Sommer utilizes various diagnostic tools, such as imaging (like X-rays and ultrasounds), biopsies (tissue samples), and laboratory tests, to get a clear picture of your pet’s condition. This detailed information allows us to create the most effective treatment strategy.
- Chemotherapy (Oral and Injectable): Chemotherapy involves using medications to target and destroy cancer cells. Dr. Sommer is skilled in administering chemotherapy through different routes, including oral medications you can give at home and injectable medications given at the clinic. We understand your concerns about side effects and will carefully monitor your pet to ensure their comfort throughout the treatment process. Our approach focuses on managing side effects and maintaining a good quality of life for your furry family member.
- Pain Control and Quality of Life Management: Ensuring your pet is comfortable and enjoys a good quality of life is paramount throughout their cancer journey. Dr. Sommer will develop a comprehensive pain management plan, utilizing various medications and techniques to keep your pet as pain-free as possible. We also focus on addressing any other symptoms and providing supportive care to help your pet maintain their happiness and engagement in daily activities.
- Bone Marrow Aspirates: In some types of cancer, evaluating the bone marrow (the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made) is important for diagnosis and staging. A bone marrow aspirate is a minimally invasive procedure where a small sample of bone marrow is collected, usually from the hip or shoulder. Dr. Sommer is trained in performing this procedure safely and comfortably for your pet.
- Multimodal Therapy: Often, the most effective approach to treating cancer involves combining different therapies. Dr. Sommer will carefully consider all available options, such as surgery, radiation therapy (which may require referral to a specialized center), chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, to create a tailored treatment plan that maximizes the chances of a positive outcome for your pet.
- Immunotherapy: This is a newer and exciting area of cancer treatment that works by harnessing your pet’s own immune system to fight cancer cells. Dr. Sommer stays up-to-date on the latest advancements in immunotherapy and can determine if this approach might be beneficial for your pet’s specific type of cancer.
- Surgery: We do not currently have a boarded surgeon on staff, but our skilled veterinary team at ACES can also perform a range of important surgical procedures. These include the removal of some masses, as well as digit, limb, and tail amputations when necessary for your pet’s health and well-being. We also offer internal surgeries such as splenectomies (removal of the spleen), and biopsies of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and liver to aid in diagnosis. If surgery is a necessary part of your pet’s plan, Dr. Sommer will thoroughly evaluate each case and ensure that your pet receives their surgery with the most appropriate and experienced veterinary professional, whether that is within our walls, or with a specialist surgeon. Your pet’s safety and optimal outcome are our top priorities.
